Nigeria’s fintech firms and startups have emerged as standout winners at the Nigeria Internet Registration Association’s (NiRA) .ng Domain Awards, underscoring a growing shift toward local digital identity, trust, and long-term online ownership among young, tech-driven companies.
At NiRA’s 20th Anniversary and 8th .ng Awards held in December 2025, innovation-led firms took centre stage. Hervest was named Startup Company of the Year, Nibox Financial Payment Solutions won .ng Fintech Company of the Year, while Afrigo Pay Financial clinched the top honour as .ng Company of the Year 2025. Industry analysts say fintechs and startups are excelling at the domain awards because their business models depend heavily on consumer confidence, regulatory alignment, and online visibility. In sectors such as payments, lending, agritech, and digital commerce, adopting a locally governed .ng domain has become a strategic signal of legitimacy to users, investors, and regulators alike.
Speaking at the event, NiRA President Adesola Akinsanya described the .ng domain as Nigeria’s “digital anchor,” noting that two decades ago, pioneers laid the foundation for what has become the custodian of the nation’s online identity. He urged businesses, institutions, creators, and citizens to embrace the .ng domain as a symbol of national representation, trust, and economic empowerment.
Startups are also benefiting from NiRA’s expanding ecosystem, which increasingly links domain management with broader digital governance issues such as data protection, digital sovereignty, and local content preservation. The recognition of organisations like the Nigeria Data Protection Commission alongside fintech firms highlights the growing convergence between innovation and regulation in Nigeria’s tech space.
Beyond fintech, the awards showcased how startups across sectors are leveraging the .ng domain to compete globally while maintaining strong local relevance. From agritech to media and e-commerce, young companies are using Nigeria’s country-code domain to anchor their services within the local economy and culture.
Chairman of the .ng Awards Committee, Peter Oluka, said the event was designed to honour pioneers, celebrate current leaders, and recognise achievements that continue to elevate the .ng brand. As NiRA marks 20 years, he noted that the focus must now shift to the next two decades with renewed commitment and national pride.
NiRA’s Chief Operating Officer, Oluwaseyi Onasanya, led a tribute session honouring individuals whose early efforts shaped the association. She highlighted the sacrifices and collaborations that enabled the repatriation and governance of the .ng domain, describing its journey as central to Nigeria’s digital awakening.
A major highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of NiRA’s 20th Anniversary logo and a hardcover History Documentary, featuring over 30 stakeholders recounting the association’s evolution from inception to its current role as steward of Nigeria’s digital identity.
The awards also recognised excellence across sectors. Pulse Nigeria won Best Online Media Website, Cool FM was named Best Electronic Media Website (Radio), the Corporate Affairs Commission received an award for Digital Innovation in the Federal Government category, and Lagos State was honoured for Digital Innovation in State Government.
Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to pioneers and key figures, including Dr. (Mrs.) Ibukun Abimbola Odusote, Chief Chima Onyekwere, Dr. Isaac Odeyemi, former President Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR), and the late Engr. Ndukwe Kalu, whose contributions remain integral to NiRA’s legacy.
Presidential Awards also went to organisations and individuals advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation, including Go54, Nigerian Copyright Commission, Nigeria Computer Society, QServers, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, and others. The highest recognition of the night went to Afrigo Pay Financial as .ng Company of the Year 2025.
As NiRA celebrates two decades of managing Nigeria’s online identity, the dominance of fintechs and startups at the .ng Domain Awards signals the direction of the country’s digital future—one where owning a trusted local digital identity is increasingly central to success.
